Stairs, Trains & Automobiles (W.A.S.T.E.L.A.N.D.S.' trip to Yule Prog)

Let me begin by saying I had the time of my life these past couple of days. This years Yule Prog was the dopest shit I have ever been apart of Hip Hop wise. Getting to share the stage with the likes of: Vast Aire, Despot, Zesto, Super Chron Flight Brothers, Homeboy Sandman, Hi-Coup and 11a.m. was an incredible experience. New York is a great city, (although their pizza and White Castle suck) you can feel the different vibe immediately. The drive there was long, (15 hrs.) we left at 11:30pm...but I got to see alot of different places, the furthest east I have been is Columbus. We got into Staten Island and from there it was the jump off...we went over to Brothers Pizza which is supposed to have the dopest pizza, (according to Nasa and Shortrock) it could have been more wrong, the cheese fell off my slice as I was pulling it out of the bag...plus it was mad greasy. My brother came in and asked how it was and I responded with, and I quote: "It sucks".

That earned me the dirtiest looks from this old lady sitting next to me, fuck her she doesn't know what pizza tastes like (the next day we went back and I got the Grandma Slice which was better but, NYC has nothing on Chicago pizza). Wednesday night we made our way over to Public Assembly in Brooklyn (to cross the bridge is $10!!!) for the 1st annual Yule Prog Battle and performances by The Presence and Masai Bey, which was a thrill because I have known The Presence for 4 years and have never seen them live. And if you missed Masai Bey's performance then you need to bash your head through glass and bleed out...he murdered it. Plus it was super cool to meet people I have been associated with but never met in person. The battle was alot of fun, thank God I didn't have to get in that shit...there was some dope cats in that shit (big up to Chaz Kangaz).

Thursday was the big day, what we came to do...rock that shit. But, first we played tourist and took the ferry
(The Statue Of Liberty is beautiful) into Manhattan to find souvenirs and see the city. Let me say this, New Yorkers will walk through you instead of slowing down or side stepping, twice someone walked directly into me and Augury...and yes they saw us (I mentioned this later to Nasa and apparently he likes to elbow tourists). We went down Wall St. and saw Ground Zero which was really sobering because its strange to think that two buildings used to be there with all those people gone, it changes you when you go down there. Then we proceeded to Century 21 for souvenirs, I bought slippers for my daughter and Denku bought a coat. We walked around for a little more then we hopped the train to Brooklyn, which is alot different from the El but, I really can't explain how. We got off at Atlantic Ave. so we had to walk a few blocks and we came across this shoe store called Modells and Augury was like: "...let's check this out" and was like: "Nah, cuz if we
do...im gonna cop something..." and sure enough 10 min. later I walked out with fresh Air Max 90's.

So we finally get to Southpaw I set up the merch table, meet some cats and then I get a call from my brother saying he was here. I go meet him and let him in and he asks if I could grab his bag and put it in the green room, (which was ill cuz it had all kinds of tags from people that performed there...most notably, Slick Rick and Company Flow) big mistake because I proceeded to fall down a flight of stairs 30 min. before show time...this experience has shown me one of two things: either God loves me or I'm invincible. The whole night people would mention how ill that 1st step was, later that night I was chillin' in the green room and I could hear Vast Aire and Karniege coming down the stairs and I hear Vast say: "Yo son, that first step is ill".

Back to the story...so we finally it the stage after I get my breath back and get my Wolverine on and recover from my injuries. It was not a good start, I was so amped about performing in Brooklyn that I forgot my 1st verse to a song that I have been performing for 5 years. But, I made a nice recovery and we wound up smashing it...thanks to Shortrock for wiggy wiggles. Everyone killed it, highlights include Vast Aire dropping "Rasberry Fields" and Despot killing "Homesickness". All in all it was best show I have ever been associated with, I can't wait until next year to rock Yule Prog again.

The next day we left 12:30pm (and didn't get home until 6:30am the next day!!) It was a drive home that was full of anger, fatigue and snow. But lets just say KFC in Middletown, New Jersey will work on their food service, to make a long story short it ended with my brother shitting in their bathroom sink (if you want the full story hit me up).

Special thanks to Nasa, Angela and Cirrus Minor for allowing us to take up some floor space and making Staten Island a home away from home. Also, big up to Billy Woods and Anton for being so cool, it was nice to finally meet, 11a.m. we need to do some shit soon, Zesto, how are you not a legend? Masai Bey, you're one of the coolest dudes i met, it was a privilege to see you rock, Vast Aire and Karniege you are two chill cats we need to work soon...and anyone that showed us love, thank you can't wait till next year!!! Oh yeah, shout to Despot...you smashed it as well. (get your shrug on) Uncommon Bitches!!!
