I was sitting here checking my email and I realized something...we have become a password and social network driven society. I have different passwords for: (here we go, ready?) 3 emails, Myspace, Twitter, Ning, Youtube, my website, access to my bank account, Paypal, Itunes, my cdbaby account, my computer, Playstation Network, PIN for the ATM, various stores I shop at online, 5 different passwords I have to access at work and probably a few more I can't think of right now. To me that's pretty ridiculous, when did this happen?

I understand the need for security and such, but out of all those things which were the most important? My bank account, PIN, work related passwords and maybe ONE of my emails...lol. The other stuff is mindless social network shit that really has no relevance to real life, but this shows how dependent we have become on technology.

The other day I was on the phone with Nasa (actually talking not texting, wow you can use your phone to
talk to people...) and we were at the end of our conversation as Cirrus Minor was walking in the studio and I told Nasa to tell him I said, What Up. Then I asked him whats the best way to get a hold of Cirrus and his first thought wasn't through phone or text, it was Facebook. I said I didn't have a Facebook, (I know I'm the only person on earth who doesn't have one). I said "email or Myspace?" He said he didn't check those much anymore and I jokingly responded with: "What about the phone?, you can talk to people on those..."

We had a good laugh about it, but then I started to think about myself occasionally when I hand out business cards, I'll tell the person my email and website are on there, but rarely do I say my phone number is on there "give me a call". Have we reached that point where either A) we don't want to communicate directly with people anymore? Or, B) we don't really know how to anymore? Our passwords dominate us whether we want to admit it or not.

I think it might be because we subconsciously find comfort in controlling our interactions with people, especially people we may not know too well. With Twitter, Facebook and still in some cases Myspace we put a lot of ourselves out there on the internet and we don't even think twice about it. Pictures, personal info, what we are doing at the moment and even exact locations. But where is the real human connection? When my Myspace was the 'in thing', I would find myself interacting with people and ending the conversation with, "You have a Myspace?" And I know its the same thing now with Facebook. I won't lie sometimes I'll post something on Twitter and I'll go back a few hours later just to see if I got any responses. Oh how we reach for social acceptance and relevance. What a sad and exciting world we live in, and by the way, when I email this to Nasa to post on "The Prog Blog" I will send him a text to tell him I sent him an email.
